iMac G5

Original iMac G5 uses DDR

iMac G5 iSight uses DDR2

Motherboard RAM: 0mb
Sockets: 1 or 3
RAM type: 184pin DDR or 240pin DDR2

Original iMac G5 (DDR):
The original iMac G5 has two memory slots, which can hold a maximum of 1Gig in each. This memory type is called DDR400 184pin DIMMs. Memory does not have to be installed in matched pairs, but a performance gain is realized if identical sized modules are in both slots. Pairing modules enables Memory Interleaving, which allows your memory controller to address both modules as a single 128bit memory bank.

iMac G5 iSight Model (DDR2):
The newer iMac G5 with the built in iSight camera runs 240pin DDR2 DIMMs. This machine has 512mb soldered on the logic board, and one memory slot. That memory slot can hold a maximum of a 2Gig DIMM, for a system maximum of 2.5Gigs.

Stacked v. non-stacked chips:
A module built from stacked chips takes two RAM wafers and stacks them on top of each other. This makes it possible to build a large module (like a 1Gig DIMM) using cheap low density parts. Stacked chip modules are bad because they draw more power, and have inflated error rates caused by heat build-up. Ramjet uses the highest quality non-stacked IC chips.
