Mac Tip - Adding Memory to your Mac Pro
Sometimes customers ask if there is a particular order they should use when adding memory to their Mac Pro or if they need to take out the existing memory.
Memory in the Mac Pro 1,1 through 3,1 must be installed in pairs; once you have more than two modules installed, the modules must be seated next to each other on the riser. In many machines that have never been updated, you will most likely have to move the modules you have as default in your machine around, but you can absolutely use them with the new modules.
Often the modules in these machines shipped from Apple with one module in position 1 on the first riser, and one module in position 1 on the second riser. To add your new memory, you will just shift your two existing modules to positions 1 and 2 on either riser, and then put the new modules in positions 1 and 2 on the other riser. If you are buying more than a pair of new modules, you can place the additional modules in positions 3 and 4 on either riser as well.
If you experience any trouble getting your modules seated, feel free to give our customer service a call at 1-800-831-4569 and we would be happy to walk you through the best placement for your modules.
